Welcome to Contra Costa County

General

The northern of the two “East Bay” counties of the San Francisco Bay Area, Contra Costa County has a population of roughly 1,166,000 people. The county seat is Martinez. It is primarily suburban in nature, although it also has substantial water frontage along the coastline of the San Pablo Bay.

Business and the Economy

The early industrial growth in the county came from agriculture and heavy industries such as oil refining, chemical manufacturing, and steel manufacturing.

More recent economic development has come in the form of white collar office jobs from across a wide variety of industries, spread out from the location of the county governmental seat in Martinez and South past San Ramon as well as East from Walnut Creek and through Lafayette and Orinda to the Caldicott tunnel. This was accelerated as major employers moved into the suburbs from the core cities set out around the shores of the San Francisco Bay in response to the relocation of their employees in pursuit of larger homes and yards for their families.

Living and Visiting

The county is broadly divided into three sub-areas: West County, Central County and East County, and contains 19 different cities and towns. There is a large and diverse housing stock in each of these 3 main areas, as indicated by the county’s sizeable population.

There is a wide ranging selection of areas to suit all household finances and preferred employment locations ranging from large custom homes on large lots to cheaper tract homes in modern developments.
